And Rohhypnol are powerful sedative hypnotic agents. Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic that produces a dreamy tranquility and disinhibition in small doses. Unlike opiates, these sedatives encourage sociability and seldom cause nausea. The popularity of these club drugs is due to their low cost and convenient distribution as small pills, powders, or liquids that can be taken orally. Consequently, these drugs are popular among young persons who have been educated about the hazards of drug injection and the dangers of heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine. However, most users are unaware that MDMA is a type of methamphetamine, and incorrectly assume that substances that appear as pharmaceuticals are safe to use. Club drugs often are taken together, with alcohol, or with other drugs to enhance their effect. Often, they are misrepresented, adulterated, or entirely substituted for another substance without the users' knowledge. These actions result in an extraordinarily high risk of unanticipated effects and overdose.3 In the past 10 years, there has been a generalized decrease in the use of marijuana, cocaine, and heroin in the United States, according to statistics from the Drug Enforcement Administration, the University of Michigan Monitoring the Future Study, the Columbia University National Survey of American Attitudes onSubstanceAbuse, theCommunityEpidemiology Working Group, and the Partnership for a Drug-FreeAmerica.4 However, during this same period, the use of club drugs has dramatically increased.5 A 2001-2002 Chicago household survey6 of 18- to 40-year-old persons showed that 38 percent had attended a rave, and 49 percent of these had a taken a club drug. One Australian study7 showed that only 8 percent of club-goers had not consumed any psychoactive substance. 2620-AMERICAN FAMILY PHYSICIAN.

Results and Discussion We had previously established that MZR was not toxic to HESMF cells at concentrations up to 965 m. No cytotoxicity of the combination of MZR and ACV in the concentrations used in the antiviral assays was observed. The results obtained for different concentrations of MZR and ACV used in combination are shown on Table I. MZR showed no antiviral activity against HSV-1 in HESMF cells at the used doses. Lack of antiherpes effect of MZR was in accordance with the observation of Mizuno et al., 1974, with HeLa cell cultures. However, MZR enhanced enormously the anti-HSV-1 activity of ACV, at that by using ACV in concentrations with limited activity 1.1 m ACV reduces 45-times the virus yield ; . When the drugs were combined in concentrations of 154 m 40 g MZR and 1.1 m 0.25 g ml ; ACV complete virus reduction 106-fold ; was achieved, indicating a high degree of synergism. By using the non-effective dose of ACV, 0.55 m 0.125 g ml ; , the virus titer was reduced more than 6000 times. The inhibition of HSV-1 replication by the two substances in combination was reversed when infection was carried out in excess of guanosine. Fig. 1 presents data of the antiviral effect when, for instance, effects rohypnol side.

Objectives: To assess the scale of drink spiking in our area and identify which drugs are being used to spike drinks and also to assess whether there is a problem with drink spiking in any particular establishment. Methods: A prospective study of all patients presenting to an emergency department with alleged drink spiking over a 12-month period. Samples were analysed for levels of alcohol and drugs of misuse. Information was collected as to where the alleged spiking took place and the involvement of the police. Results: 75 patients attended with alleged drink spiking over the period of 12 months. 42 samples were analysed and tested positive for drugs of misuse in 8 19% ; cases. 65% of those tested had alcohol concentrations .160 mg%. The alleged spiking took place in 23 different locations, with 2 locations accounting for 31% of responses. Only 14% of those questioned had informed the police. Conclusions: Most patients allegedly having had a spiked drink test negative for drugs of misuse. The symptoms are more likely to be a result of excess alcohol. The local research ethics committee granted ethical approval. The patient was provided with details of the study and its aims. Samples of blood for blood alcohol level ; and urine for analysis of drugs of misuse ; were obtained. These were sent for analysis with the patients' informed consent given either at the time of presentation or at the time of the follow-up telephone questionnaire. A follow-up telephone questionnaire was performed a few days later. Information was collected as to where the alleged spiking took place, whether the police had been informed and their use of medication or drugs at the time in question or on a regular basis. The samples were analysed for blood alcohol level and the presence of any of the following: cocaine, amphetamine, cannabinoid, opiates, methadone, benzodiazepines, ketamine, diphenhydramine, GHB and rohypnol.

BY ISABELLE LAPORTE "I'm tired of putting contact lenses in every morning and taking them out every evening." "I don't want to depend on glasses to find my way to the bathroom." "It annoys me when my glasses get fogged up each time I get on the bus in the winter." Do you recognize yourself in these statements? If so, eye surgery could improve the quality of your life-- under certain circumstances, that is. Are You a Good Candidate? Laser surgery is for correction of myopia nearsightedness ; , hyperopia farsightedness ; and astigmatism deformed vision ; . These are all problems related to the curvature of the cornea. Lasers cannot do anything for presbyopia difficulty seeing short distances ; because it is linked to the loss of elasticity in the crystalline lens. A surgeon may refuse to operate if your myopia is too severe -10.00 diopters or more ; , if your pupils dilate more than average in low light settings or if your cornea is too thin. Ideally, your vision should have been stable for at least a year, which doesn't often occur except in your mid-twenties. Actually, laser surgery won't keep your vision from changing. Apart from age, many factors can affect vision, including pregnancy, breastfeeding, diabetes and many prescription drugs, such as cortisone or antidepressants. The Risks The question that is asked most often by people considering laser surgery is: Is there a risk of becoming blind? The risk of blindness is practically nil, but cannot be entirely excluded. According to documentation by one eye surgery clinic, it is about one in 40, 000 cases. According to certain studies, it seems that the incidence of "minor" problems, like dryness in the eyes and halos around lights at night, occurs at a rate of about 3 to 5%, while the risk of severe problems, leading to a loss in the quality of vision, is below 1%. How to Choose the Clinic? The first criterion should be the confidence you have in the surgeon. Ask for recommendations from your friends. Almost everyone knows someone who's had an eye operation done. The experience of the surgeon also makes a difference. Studies have established that there is a learning curve in performing laser surgery, so opt for a professional who has performed at least 1000 procedures. Don't trust the price alone. How Does the Operation Work? You lie down on the operating table. The surgeon puts anesthetic drops in your eyes. After having installed a retractor to keep your eye open, he lifts a thin layer of the cornea with the help of a microkeratome. It is a difficult first moment to endure, because this apparatus emits the same vibrations and the same sounds as an electric razor. Next, the surgeon guides the laser along the cornea that has just been exposed and burns away the cells necessary to correct your vision. At this point, it will smell like something is burning. The surgeon cleans the eye with a saline solution and then puts the layer of cornea back in place. Voila! Nothing remains but to repeat the process with your other eye. Ten minutes later, everything is finished. You can go back home with protective patches over your eyes. You will probably be able to return to work in a few days.

Several characteristics contribute to a patient's level of hopefulness, Ms. Morgante noted. Self-esteem, feelings of competence, and control of one's life are related to hope. "An underpinning of faith, whether expressed as conventional religious faith or simply as a feeling of being connected with a higher being, has also been found to have a positive impact on a patient's hopefulness." Several nursing measures can help encourage hope, stated Ms. Morgante Table 1 ; . Before intervention can occur, however, the nurse must recognize the degree of hope that a patient has, she explained. As a frequent caregiver, the nurse can identify and evaluate behaviors that reflect hope Table 2 ; . In addition, MS nurses can ensure that adequate resources are available to support hope. This may involve ensuring access to the workplace. A study by Foote et al3 showed that employment correlated positively with higher levels of selfesteem and hope in MS patients. In addition, minor modifications such as grab bars and a chair in the shower can make bathing easier and safer for the patient and increase a sense of independence, Ms. Morgante advised. "Creating hope that extends forward into time gives most patients a, because making ghb.

Although no standards of the derivatized drugs were available to assist in the preparation of calibration curves, the area results from the spiked urine samples and the concentrations of the derivatized drugs in these samples could be used to construct calibration curves. While such curves are obviously not as accurate as those using clean standards, the results obtained were nonetheless most satisfactory. Curves were constructed for the medium, low, and very low samples the high sample was not included, as at this level with the high detector value used, some nonlinearity was observed ; , with an example showing the calibration curve for the eltenac methyl derivative shown below, for example, alprazolam.

ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF A MEDICATION ADHERENCE INTERVENTION IN ADOLESCENT HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS Kimberly P. Lewis * , Mark Mentser, Renee F. Robinson, Amy Wright, Kristen E. Lamberjack Columbus Children's Hospital, 700 Children's Drive, Columbus, OH, 43205 lewiskim chi.osu Background: Medication adherence is a common problem among many patients, especially for those with chronic conditions. It is a general issue for all ages, but adolescents have been identified as a potentially problematic group due to the shift of medication-taking responsibility from the parent caregiver to the patient. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine if a pharmacist-based, individualized educational intervention will have a positive impact on medication adherence in adolescent hypertensive patients. Methods: Development of this pilot program includes collaboration with the nephrology division. This is a randomized study of hypertensive patients between the ages of 9 and 18 identified through the nephrology division. Identified patients and parents receive a complete explanation of the study and are asked to sign consent upon clinic arrival. An initial assessment is administered to all patients to measure their baseline knowledge of hypertension and the medication s ; they are taking and to identify the barriers to adherence. The randomization is then revealed. Patients are randomized into one of four treatment groups: education and follow-up, education only, follow-up only, no education or follow-up. The pharmacist provides education for those receiving education and develops an individualized plan to improve adherence. Reminder techniques such as pill boxes, text messaging, emails, calendars, and phone calls may be used as adherence tools. Patients are retrospectively monitored on antihypertensive medication refill history by a phone call to their pharmacy. The patients randomized to follow-up receive phone calls at 2-, 4-, 6-, and 8-weeks to assess adherence via patient self-report; additional education and pharmacist counseling will also be provided. Patients' medication refill history is reevaluated and a follow-up questionnaire is completed at 8weeks to assess adherence rates and disease state and medication knowledge. Those patients not receiving education at the initial visit are educated at this visit. Results: Results are pending further data analysis. Learning Objectives: To identify reasons for implementation of a pharmacistmanaged medication adherence intervention in adolescent patients with hypertension ; To assess the impact of pharmacist-led education and followup on adherence Self Assessment Questions: What were the most common reasons adolescents did not adhere to the medication regimen prescribed by their physician? Pharmacists do not play a role in providing adequate education to patients. True False.

The Niagara Region is one of the safest places in the world. To help make it safer, the Niagara Regional Police has compiled the information that follows with the assistance of the Brock University Campus Police Services. What is Rohypnol? Rohynpol pronounced row-hip-nol ; is the brand name of flunitrazepam a benzodiazepam ; . It is sedative, which milligram for milligram is ten times stronger than valium. It is similar in size, shape and colour to Aspirin. The pill is a small white tablet that is single or cross-scored on one side and has the word "ROCHE" and a circled numeral 1 or 2 the other side. Robypnol dissolves easily in juice, coffee, carbonated and alcoholic beverages. It is colourless, odourless, and tasteless when dissolved in any liquid. The effects of this drug are enhanced when mixed with alcohol, causing sedation, loss of inhibitions, relaxation, blackouts and amnesia. It can also cause respiratory depression, comas and even death. The drug takes effect in 20 minutes and the effects may last for up to 8 - hours. Rohypnol's amnesic effects usually leaves the victim with little or no memory of the assault. The drug is distributed in its original "bubble packaging" which adds an air of legitimacy and makes it appear to be legal. Signs and Symptoms Rohypnl can cause quick intoxication, drowsiness, dizziness, disorientation, impaired judgement and co-ordination, memory loss, simultaneous hot and cold flashes, nausea, and difficulty in speaking and moving. Street Names Rohyppnol is sold illegally on the street using any one of the following names: Rophy Roofies Rope Ropies Ruffies R2 Rib Roaches Roachies Mind Erasers Stupefi Trip-and-fall and toprol.
Canadas first major seizure of Rohypnol occurred in January 1999 when the RCMP seized 3, 500 doses in North Vancouver, BC.3 In the United States of America, federal Drug Enforcement Administration seizures of Rohypnol have increased dramatically since the mid-1980s. Between 1985 and 1991 there were only three federal rape cases involving date rape drugs. Yet, in 1996 alone there were 2, 607 state and local rape cases involving date rape drugs.4.

Blood flow to exercising skeletal muscles increases and under certain circumstances there can be `competition' between vasodilating metabolites from the active muscles and increased sympathetic vasoconstrictor nerve activity directed toward them Strandell & Shepherd, 1967; Rowell, 1997 ; . One concept, termed `functional sympatholysis', is that muscle metabolites blunt sympathetic vasoconstriction so that blood flow and oxygen delivery to the exercising muscles is driven by metabolic demand Remensnyder et al. 1962 ; . In this context, Thomas and colleagues 1994 ; have demonstrated that muscle contraction eliminates postjunctional a2 sympathetic vasoconstriction in rat muscle. However, post-junctional a1 vasoconstriction remained intact, indicating that functional sympatholysis mainly involves attenuation of post-junctional a2 receptor-mediated vasoconstriction. These observations are consistent with data from studies of the microcirculation in rat skeletal muscle showing that post-junctional vasoconstricting, for example, effects of ghb.

Environmental performance. We now undertake routine monitoring of various measures of our environmental performance at our main R&D and manufacturing sites in Switzerland, France and the USA, the results of which are submitted to external review bodies. The chart below showed that we achieved significant environmental improvements in 2003. Despite raising our manufacturing output by 23% and more than doubling its value ; , our use of energy only increased by 8% and we actually reduced our consumption of water by 5%. Furthermore we cut the amount of waste disposed by landfill by 8% and the amount incinerated by 36% while increasing the amount recycled by 26%. Although we are proud of this achievement, we are determined to do better in the current year. The Community We aim to be a `good neighbour' wherever we have business units and to be active participants in the community. While we do not believe that we have a mandate from shareholders for the company to make charitable donations, we do encourage our employees to support various charitable causes. For example, our San Diego employees raised nearly $5, 000 for the victims of the forest fires that ravaged the surrounding area in November. The picture below shows one of the burnt-out homes.
