Petricoin talked at length about how the technology is being used to identify patterns of protein distribution associated with ovarian cancer, the first step in developing an ovarian cancer screening test. This work received a lot of press coverage last year because preliminary work with the test showed it to be both sensitive it finds things ; and specific it can tell which things are ovarian cancer ; . Pertricoin said that within the next two years the proteomic test will be in trial, being evaluated for its effectiveness in screening women at high risk for ovarian cancer. The proteomic work on breast cancer has not been as successful. My activist colleagues who are closely following this work tell me that so far the results have been hard to replicate and that they do not track at all with the genetic profiles also being developed; the patterns don't match. Apparently, with breast cancer proteomics, we can find protein patterns that reflect breast cancer when we know that what we're looking at is breast cancer, but finding those patterns will likely be a much bigger challenge when we don't.
