The spread of antibiotic resistance and progressing overuse of antimicrobial therapy require immediate interventions leading to prudent antibiotic use. The aim of the study was to describe the process of antibiotic prescribing in primary care and determinants influencing the primary care physician decision in introduction of antimicrobial therapy. Methods: In the first phase of the study October 2005 ; the general information about practice of 166 primary care physicians was collected, in the second phase November 2005 ; of the survey, information about antibiotic prescribing practice during each visit of patient with symptoms of infection was completed. All GPs were asked to complete 40 records during 2 weeks of the survey. Results: The response rate at the first phase was 50%. Total of 76 GPs from 12 cities agreed to participate in the second stage 91, 6% of the doctors completed the first phase ; . The average population of patients covered by one physician was 2588 persons. The most commonly indicated number of antibiotic prescriptions during 3 working days was 1120 which consisted 21, 6% of all given prescriptions.
