Rugs and the various flatwaves are made from five basic materials; sheep wool, goat hair, cotton, floss silk, and silk.

The art of carpet weaving which has been going on for thousands of years is one of the oldest professions in the world. Today we have evidence that in 6000 BC, goats and sheep were being sheared for wool and hair and then this material was spun and woven.

The materials used in hand made carpets are chiefly wool or silk. The foundation that the knots are tied on can be wool, cotton, silk or even goat hair. Cotton is used extensively as the preferred foundation due to it sturdy properties - it does not shrink in different weather conditions, it maintains the shape of the carpet and lies flat, it is finer and more compact than wool. Wool and silk are most often used for the knotting of the pile, but they are sometimes used for the warp and the weft.

The warp and weft of a carpet can be various combinations of wool, cotton, silk, and these materials themselves come in various qualities and textures.
